This February, one of Australia’s most innovative and newest opera companies More than Opera (MTO) is bringing Wagner to the people in the most accessible and fun way possible.
Melbourne’s MTO is proud to announce the premiere season of THE RING. Wagner. Animated, a ninety-minute version of Wagner’s Ring Cycle opening at the 2012 Adelaide Fringe on 24 February at the ‘Big Slapple’ Apollo Theatre and Norwood Concert Hall for 5 performances only. And if anybody has ever wanted to sing Wagner, SING YOUR OWN WAGNER CHORUSES (SYOWC) invites everyone for for a massive Wagner sing-along conducted by three Maestri - conductor David Kram, State Opera of SA’s Timothy Sexton and Co-Opera’s Brian Chatterton with two performances on 26 and 29 February.
THE RING. Wagner. Animated condenses Wagner’s epic RING CYCLE (which normally takes four days) to just ninety minutes. Designed for children and adults, MTO’s re-imaging combines exciting animation inspired by Japanese animé created by Leigh Ryan, the passion of three opera singers (baritone Lucas de Jong, tenor Carlos Enrique Bárcenas and rising star soprano Olivia Cranwell) and an abbreviated Wagner score created by Musical Director David Kram and performed by wind band and the Bent Leather Band - who combine sarrusophone and ambisonic in-the-moment surround sound.
The RING. Wagner. Animated is the brainchild of MTO’s Artistic Director and Wagner expert David Kram. Maestro Kram has conducted three great Wagner operas in European opera houses: LOHENGRIN in Mannheim, DIE MEISTERSINGER in Wiesbaden and SIEGFRIED in Nantes as well as being a coach for the 1998 Adelaide ‘RING’. Maestro Kram is also well known to Australian audiences for his work with Opera Australia and in Adelaide at the State Opera of South Australia.
“I am thrilled to be able to present this wonderfully talented and innovative creative team. Writing the new script and re-orchestrating the score knowing that Wagner will reach so many people has been an absolute joy,” said Kram.
The production will be directed and designed by Cameron Menzies and the voice of Australia’s renowned performer Melissa Madden Grey as the Narrator will keep audiences entranced throughout.
MTO’s new production is already winning praise from opera companies around Australia.’The RING. Wagner. Animated, bridges the gap between opera and the general public. Grandparents could take their grandchildren, giving an enjoyable experience for them both,’ said Lyndon Terracini, Artistic Director of Opera Australia.
MTO’s fabulous website has all the details of the performances, and there are special Summer Early Bird specials for anyone who would like to join SING YOUR OWN WAGNER CHORUSES. ‘As there are no audition requirements, just a love of singing, chorus numbers are filling,’ says Kram.
MTO is a Melbourne-based company, which uses the power of opera for inspiration and community well-being.
