Many of the new productions for the Opera Australia 2012 Season have already been leaked (see ‘Opera Australia 2012 Season leaks’ from the 16th January 2011 on this site). The 2012 Season will also include a new production of Rogers and Hammersteins’ SOUTH PACIFIC to be performed during the Winter Season in Sydney.

In addition to the previously leaked new productions of  Puccini’s TURANDOT, Donizetti’s LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR, Mozart’s MARRIAGE OF FIGARO, Verdi’s LA TRAVIATA (Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour), and Korngold’s DIE TOTE STADT, other operas to be staged include Mozart’s COSI FAN TUTTE and THE MAGIC FLUTE, Strauss’ SALOME, Verdi’s AIDA, Bizet’s PEARL FISHERS, Donizetti’s DON PASQUALE  and Britten’s TURN OF THE SCREW.

The final program will be formally announced by the Artistic Director of Opera Australia – Lyndon Terracini, at a launch in the Sydney Opera House Opera Theatre at 1pm on Tuesday, 9th August 2011. Leading Artists, including Cheryl Barker and Rosario La Spina, will join The Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra to provide a musical taste of the 2012 repertoire.

The 2012 Melbourne season. Oh dear!
Madama Butterfly yet again! I’m a subscriber and have seen this opera so many times I could sing it myself!
My family and I were hoping we would see” Partenope” in Melbourne. Why not? It won “Best Opera” in the Helpman Awards recently. We are very disappointed indeed.
If Opera Australia continues to recycle performances such as Butterfly, Carmen, and Pearl Fishers, it will lose long-standing subscribers, my family included.

      Dear Fay,
I agree with your comments and think there are many subscribers in both Melbourne and Sydney who are also questioning the value of maintaining subscriptions when the same old repertoire is regurgitated year after year.

Hi! I’m super excited to go and see South Pacific – I absolutely love love love Rodgers and Hammerstein’s work. I was just wondering who is going to take the part of Knucklehead Nelly? I know that Emil will be done by Teddy Tahu Rhodes, but I would really like to know about the other cast members, Nelly and also Cable. If you could reply and let me know, I’d be very appreciative. Thankyou!

    Dear Alison,
At this time the details of the full cast for the OA South Pacific has not been announced. I am as much in the dark as you. I believe Teddy Tahu Rhodes is to be the only opera singer in the cast, and the rest of the principals will be from the music theatre community.
Hmm Not much help here – perhaps I am more of an Outsider than an Insider after all !
    Cheers,
